Law and Gospel

Mr. Allen, that is so important – that we understand the relationship of the Law and the Gospel. It is at the very heart of the three angel’s messages. It is amazing how the vast majority of Christians are confused on this point. I guess that, it being the essential truth of salvation, the devil has tried to make sure that as many people as possible get it wrong.

Where people get in to trouble is in assuming that the Law and the Gospel are somehow opposite, perhaps even mutually exclusive. So if those are the only two choices, and you’ve got to pick one of them, you just pick the one you like and toss out the other one. But some folks feel that you have to keep the right balance of the two – like yen and yang or something. Such a balance is hard to find (usually between 7 and 9 commandments), and even harder to maintain.

The truth is, however, that we need all of both. All the Commandments, and all the Gospel – at the same time. The Law is impossible without the Gospel. The Gospel is meaningless without the Law. The Law performs the function that it always did, while the Gospel does what the Law could never do. And so it all gets done. The Bible says that Christ is able to present us faultless. He can do this only in His appointed way – Righteousness by Faith. Real righteousness by real faith. This is what the Christian world has missed. This is our message for this time.

“The terms of the “old covenant” were, Obey and live: “If a man do, he shall even liven in them” ( Ezekiel 20:11; Lev.18:5); “…The “new covenant” was established upon “better promises”- the promise of forgiveness of sin and of the grace of God to renew the heart and bring it into harmony with the principles of God’s law.” This shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; after those days, says the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write them in their hearts… I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” Jeremiah 31:33,34.

… “Instead of going about to establish our own righteousness we accept the Righteousness of Christ. His blood atones for our sins. His obedience is accepted for us. Then the heart renewed by the Holy Spirit will bring forth “the fruits of the Spirit.” Through the grace of Christ we shall live in obedience to the law of God written upon our hearts…” Patriarch and Prophets. pgs 371-372. By Ellen G. White.

This New Covenant is an awsome thing. I, for one, want everything it has to offer. Those “better promises” are God’s proises to us. Our promises are about as valuable as photocopied money. If someone is still promising God “I’ll quit…” or “I’ll do better”, they have yet to really comprehend the New Covenant.

Isn’t Ellen White amazing? Every time I think I’ve discovered something new, I read where she wrote about it 100 years ago!

Obedience is not really our gift to God, But His gift to us. We just return it to Him. Like any father, He loves it when His children obey. I guess that Legalism would be trying to muster up obedience from somewhere within ourselves and offering it to God in order to receive His favor and aprobation. The main problem with it is that it is impossible.

Happy Sabbath ehuffman, I only found this website for the first time last Sabbath. Just learning my way around it better. I enjoyed your last comment about the ‘new covenat’ Amen! It is not about our promises to God, but rather about His to us! Our obedience is motivated and accomplished only because of His grace and Spirit giving to us by faith in Christ! This is RBF and it is very important we understand these things, the gospel and the law go together, it is all centered in Christ. This is what are brethern were suppose to understand in 1888,some did,but most did not! This is what we too need to understand too, when we all beleive like we should in one accord then God will give us more of His Spirit in the Latter Rain outpouring. It is a joy to see that you understand RBF. We need to pray that more of our brether will undertand RBF too. This is what I pray for now and during the coming 10 days. That we might all understand the Love of Chrit and that by trusting in His love for us, we will obey and trust Him in everything and receive more of His Spirit to show the world His Love-His Glory, that they too may be saved!

Yes Brother, Ellen White’s writings are amazing, she is my favorite author. I have confirmed and learned so my from her, next to Christ,I look forward to meeting her in the kingdom too!

I read some older postings on this website today. I really enjoy reading all your thoughts and some of the others too! It’s an inspiration to see such excellent Christ centered thoughts!

Here are some closing thoughts!

“And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” So he answered and said,” You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and your neighbor as yourself.” And He said to him, ‘You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” Luke 10:25-29

“And this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Jeremiah 23:6. “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” John 17:3
